Patrick Rutland started viola as student at The Junior Department of The Royal Academy of Music, London, where he studied with Professor James Sleigh for six years. He studied at The Royal College of Music, London, with Andriy Viytovych. Patrick spent 2010-2011 at The Manhattan School of Music, studying with Patinka Kopec.
He has had lessons and masterclasses with many leading viola players, including Roger Chase, Michael Tree, Laurence Dutton, Donald McInnes, Paul Coletti, and Paul Silverthorne. He has attended music festivals including Pilsen International Music Academy, Aurora Chamber Music Course, Casalmaggiore International Festival, and Ciaccona International Music Course.
Patrick has performed solo recitals and chamber music across much of London, New York, Spain and Sweden.
Orchestral positions Patrick has held include Sub-Principal in the Nederlands Nationaal Jeugd Orkest, and The Manhattan School of Music Philharmonic. He has also been a member of both the National Youth Strings Academy and The National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. Patrick has performed under Sir Colin Davis, Sir Neville Marriner, and Bernard Haitink.
Patrick is a member of the peripatetic teaching staff at Hill House International School, where he teaches violin and viola.
Patrick plays on a Brescian viola, ascribed to Maggini, 1600c.
